Meet
the Animals
The animals at Spring Brook Farm are important members of
our team.
Farm animals are selected for the program based on temperament
and size. Once an animal arrives at the farm, it is observed
for a period of four weeks to give us time to evaluate its
health and suitability for working with children. If the animal
is appropriate for our program, it receives one-on-one time
with our staff members becoming accustomed to the sound, appearance,
and feel of wheelchairs, walkers and other support devices.
All of our animals receive regular veterinarian care, a healthy
diet, ample exercise on our green pastures, and daily handling
by our staff and volunteers.
We are proud of our animals and feel each is exceptional
and well-suited to partner with children of varying abilities.
Geronimo is
a 22 year old Appaloosa gelding and was rescued from conditions
of severe neglect. He loves children and is a favorite in
the barn. He enjoys hanging his head out of his stall and
nuzzling people as they go past.
Bert and Ernie
are miniature donkeys. They are half brothers and have been
together since they were born 8 years ago. They are very kind
and gentle guys and love a carrot now and then.
Mickey is a
registered miniature horse and stands 34 inches tall. He is
very social, loves people, and gives rides to our very small
visitors.
Bonnie is a
17 year old miniature horse. She is a sweet little girl and
loves to be brushed. Bonnie is the mother of Cricket.
Cricket is 1
1/2 years old and has personality plus. She is our smallest
equine at only 31 inches tall. She is
very curious and loves to run fast in the fields.
Little Red is
a 23 year old Shetland pony. He is very sweet and shy.
Chester is a
Dorset sheep. He is our gentle giant who will eat oyster crackers
from a child's hand. A very large animal, but quiet and loves
attention. Chester lives with five ewes: Dolly; Lamp Chop;
Cinnamon; Sugar, and Yoshi.
Annabelle and Chloe
are Nubian goats. They are very clever and can get out of,
or into, many funny situations. They love to follow people
around.
Kirby and Cotton
are French Angora rabbits. They love to snuggle in a child’s
arms. Carrots and alfalfa are favorite foods.
Jody, Pacer, Brussel and
Sprout are pygmy goats. Brussel and Sprout
were born here at the farm in May, 2007. They are very
friendly and love attention.
