Meet Our Animals: Baxter and Tommy
We are Baxter and Tommy. We are Barn cats and we have a very important job. We watch over The Barn when no one is here and we make sure to take care of any intruders, especially mice!!! We moved to The Barn in the summer of 2026 and LOVE our new home!
Barn cats are farm heroes — they hunt mice, climb high, and even read the weather like pros! Here are some fun facts about barn cats:
- Barn cats are farm superheroes: They live on farms and help keep mice, rats, and other pests away from grain and animal feed. Without them, these pests could eat all the food!
- They’re great climbers: Barn cats can climb up into barns, attics, and even rafters to catch mice hiding in high places.
- They hunt a lot: A working barn cat might hunt dozens of times a day, but they only catch a few mice or rats. This is because they need to save energy and wait for the best chances.
- They can “read the weather”: Barn cats notice changes in the air, wind, and temperature to know when it’s going to rain or get cold — and they use that info to find safe spots.
- They’re mix of breeds: Most barn cats are not purebred like house cats. They’re usually a mix of domestic cats, which makes them tough and good at hunting.
- They can jump high: Like all cats, barn cats can jump up to five times their own height — that’s almost as high as a two‑story house.
- They help protect food: Long ago, people tamed cats to protect their stored grain from rodents. Barn cats still do this job today.
- They can be friendly or wild: Some barn cats live outside all the time and don’t see people much, while others are part‑time pets that come inside for food.
- They have a special sense of smell: Barn cats can smell food, mice, and even danger from far away — helping them find meals and stay safe.
- They’re part of the farm team: Farmers value barn cats because they work hard, adapt to the farm, and help keep the farm healthy.
